It is easy to believe
That if our hands
Do not hold the whip,
We are innocent.

It is easy to say,
“I love all people,”
“I wish no harm on anyone,”
And then turn
And support
The systems
And laws
And policies
That bring suffering
To those
We claim
To love.

This is
Hate by Proxy.
And it is as real,
As tangible,
As undeniable
As hate wielded
With our own hand.

2. The Manifestation of Our Choices

Words are easy.
Proclamations are easy.
But it is not
What we say,
It is what we do,
And what we support,
That manifests
Who we truly are.

You can claim
You are a person
Of love and compassion.
You can pray,
You can kneel,
You can worship
Every day.
But when you vote
For cruelty,
When you advocate
For exclusion,
When you ignore
The suffering
Of those
Who are different
From you—
By color,
By faith,
By whom they love,
By where they were born—
Then you have chosen
Hate
By proxy.

And you
Are not innocent.

3. The Outcome Is Known

There is no ignorance
In this.
You know
What happens
When families
Are torn apart.
You know
What happens
When dignity
Is denied
By laws
That strip people
Of their rights.

You know
The suffering
That comes
From your support
Of cruelty.

To pretend
You are detached
From the outcome
Is to lie
To yourself.

And in that lie,
You chain
Your own soul
To darkness.

You may convince
Your mind.
You may justify
Your opinions.
You may explain away
Your beliefs.
But your soul
Knows.

Your soul
Is entangled
With every action
You empower,
Every outcome
You help manifest.

The soul
Knows no loopholes.
There is no separation
Between you
And what you enable.

When you choose
Policies
Of hate,
Your soul
Carries
The weight
Of that hate.
Even if
You do not
Speak
A single
Cruel
Word.

You may not
Hold the whip.
You may not
Strike the blow.

But if you
Build the platform,
Pay the wages,
Write the law,
Justify the rule,
Ignore the cry—
You are
The master
With the whip.

There is no difference.

And your soul
Is marked
By every lash
It enables.

When we claim
To stand for love,
But act in ways
That support
Injustice,
Cruelty,
Discrimination—
Our hypocrisy
Is ugly,
And it is
On display
For all to see.

But more importantly,
It is on display
For the soul
That is you.
And your soul
Knows
The truth.

You cannot
Hide from it.
You cannot
Excuse it.

We make different
Choices.

Of enabling
Suffering
Through silence,
Through votes,
Through compliance.

The energy

The consequences

Responsibility.

Equilibrium

Sought.
And the weight

To us.

The divine spark

With hate

Or by proxy.

Refuse
To be
A proxy
For hate.

And in doing so,
We step
Into a greater
Equilibrium—
Where love
Is made manifest
By us.

And that
Is freedom.
